Holyoke Partners with Zipcar to Offer Car Sharing for Residents
New program provides a sustainable and cost effective alternative to car ownership

– Mayor Morse is proud to announce that today, June 5th, the City of Holyoke will kickoff its Zipcar car sharing services at Veterans Park at 12:30PM. Residents and guests can stop by the display throughout the afternoon to preview the cars and speak with Zipcar representatives. Zipcar will be available by the hour or by the day for residents, students, businesses and visitors in Holyoke. The service offers a smart, affordable and convenient alternative to car ownership for savvy consumers; an alternative to pricey fleet vehicles for businesses; and a fun and flexible option for people who need occasional access to a different type of car, such as convertible, hybrid, pickup or SUV. With gas, insurance, 180 free miles per day included in the simple fee, Zipcar offers residents and businesses transportation without compromise.

Zipcar will initially offer two vehicles, a Focus Hatchback and a Prius, which will have a permanent location on Maple Street across from Picknelly Adult Family Learning Center (PAFEC). Zipcars are available on-demand and can be easily reserved and accessed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

This year, Holyoke members can join for $25, with rates for Zipcar vehicles starting as low as $8.50 per hour and $69 per day. After the first year, members will pay an annual membership fee of $35. Gas, insurance, a reserved parking spot and up to 180 miles of driving per day are included in Zipcar rates, and cars can be reserved for as little as an hour or for multiple days. “I am excited to now have Zipcar available for residents and visitors of Holyoke,” said Mayor Alex Morse. “These ride share vehicles offer cleaner, greener alternatives and we’re looking at creative ways to move people around our city, for a few hours or the entire day.”

Participating members with smartphones, including iPhones and Android devices, may download the Zipcar mobile application to make reservations, lock and unlock the vehicles and honk the horn to help locate the vehicle.  Reservations can also be made over the phone or on Zipcar’s website.

“The Zipcar program will give the community the freedom of having a car without having to experience the hassles,” said Katelyn Lopresti, general manager for Zipcar University. “We’re happy to partner with Holyoke to bring this new transportation alternative to the community.”

Zipcar’s car sharing service is a key part of integrated mobility services in cities around the world, and is the only car sharing model that has been proven to reduce parking demand, traffic congestion and overall emissions while also helping to increase public transit ridership, walking and biking.
