Over the next 2 weeks, Holyoke Gas & Electric will be completing remediation work on an existing gas main that crosses the Lyman Street bridge. During the work hours, travel over the bridge will be restricted to one-way travel from Main Street towards Front Street only. Traffic heading down Lyman Street from High Street towards the bridge will be detoured onto Front Street and Dwight Street. Normal travel will be restored at the end of the work day.

Dwight Heritage and Front Streets Project

Holyoke Gas & Electric will be continuing work on their gas main relocation in Dwight St from High St to the Children’s Museum on Monday with construction expected to last another week. They have wrapped up their main line work and will be working on connecting services this week. Alternating one way traffic along Dwight Street is to be expected while this work is underway. They will shut down at the end of the day Wednesday ahead of Celebrate Holyoke.

Gagliarducci Construction will be continuing with the installation of a new drain line on the Appleton end of Heritage Street. This will include a small amount of work in Appleton Street and continue over the next wees heading east on Heritage Street up to the Suffolk Street intersection. Alternating one-way traffic should be expected at the Appleton and Heritage intersection when working is taking place in Appleton Street. The west end of Heritage St. will be closed to traffic during the work day so parkers in the lower deck of the Suffolk St garage should access the garage from Dwight Street of Suffolk Street.

There will also be test pit work taking place on Dwight Street in the vicinity of the Children’s Museum early in the work to confirm utility locations for upcoming drain and water main work in Dwight Street. Gagliarducci will shut down at the end of the day Thursday ahead of Celebrate Holyoke.

August 2nd – Project announcement

Dwight Heritage and Front Streets Project

Holyoke Gas & Electric will be starting work on their gas main relocation in Dwight St from High St to the Children’s Museum on Monday with construction expected to last 2-3 weeks. Alternating one way traffic along Dwight Street is to be expected while this work is underway. There will be normal access to the City Hall, Dwight St and Suffolk St garages although there may be times when there are delays due to construction equipment working directly in front of the garage entrances/exits on Dwight St.

Lyman Street Bridge Replacement Project

Holyoke Gas & Electric will be completing underground electric modifications on the Front St side of the bridge to accommodate the bridge closure scheduled for late fall. This work will require the temporary closure of the Lyman Street Bridge during work hours on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Traffic heading towards Main St on Lyman St will be detoured to Front St and down Dwight St. A similar detour will be in place on Main St for traffic traveling in the opposite direction. Local traffic will be allowed through these detours.

July 31st – Project announcement

Construction activity will increase this week when Holyoke Gas & Electric begins work on the replacement of an antiquated main under Dwight Street from High Street to the Children’s Museum. Their work is expected to take 2 to 3 weeks to complete and traffic along portions of Dwight Street will be restricted to one lane of alternating traffic at times. Gagliarducci will continue their preliminary activities throughout the project area while HG&E is completing their work so there may be other short-term impacts during this period. The City will provide project updates on a weekly basis to help residents and visitors to the City plan their trips to downtown.

A second and much-needed project in downtown Holyoke will also be starting soon. New England Infrastructure (NEI) will begin work on the replacement of the Lyman Street Bridge over the First Level Canal and improvements to Lyman Street from Front to Main Street. This $6.6 million project is expected to take about 2-1/2 years to complete and will involve the shutdown of Lyman Street to through traffic in late fall of 2019 through the fall of 2021. During this period, through traffic heading towards Main Street will be detoured on to Maple Street, and traffic from Main Street to Lyman will be detoured on to Race Street. Lyman Street will remain open to local traffic at both ends and a temporary bridge will allow pedestrians to continue to cross the canal.

A temporary shutdown of the Lyman Street bridge may be scheduled in the next couple of weeks to allow contractors to complete work on the utilities that cross the bridge to prepare for the longer shut-down in the fall. The City will also provide project updates on this MassDOT project when available.

Although there may be some traffic delays during the workday, downtown Holyoke remains fully open for business while these projects are ongoing. The Rotary’s Wednesday night Concert series kicked off last week and will continue through August 14th and Celebrate Holyoke will be held as scheduled at Heritage State Park beginning the evening of Friday, August 23rd through Sunday, August 25th.
