Mayor Alex B. Morse has named Michael McManus of Holyoke as the new Superintendent of the Department of Public Works in Holyoke. Mr. McManus will begin his new position on Monday, September 19th with an annual salary of $81,000.
Michael McManus has been a resident of Holyoke since 1988 and is a graduate of Holyoke Catholic High School. He earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Northeastern University and earned his Masters in Science in Civil Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). He is also certified as a Wastewater Operator Grade 6 in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Given Michael’s residency in Holyoke and his engineering background, he meets all qualifications set out by the city to be the permanent DPW Director.
During his time at Northeastern, Mike interned with Camp Dresser & McKee Smith (CDM) in Hartford and went on to work there full time after graduation. At CDM Smith he worked on a variety of municipal public works projects that included parking lots and streetscapes, recreational facilities, storm drainage, and water/sewer infrastructure rehabilitation. In 2007, Mike began working with Tighe & Bond in their Westfield office where he continued to work on all aspects of municipal public works projects, from planning, design, permitting, funding, bidding, construction, and start-up. He currently serves as the City Engineer in Easthampton.
Mayor Alex Morse believes that Mr. McManus has the expertise and experience necessary to handle the demands that come with being Superintendent of the DPW, “Mr. McManus has the qualities we are looking for. He lives in Holyoke, has the education, expertise, and experience, and he’s passionate about serving our community. I also want to thank Debra Reardon, who has been Acting DPW Superintendent throughout this transition. The City is lucky to have her and she will no doubt be vital to ensuring the success of our new Superintendent.”
The search process and interviews included a number of municipal representatives and department heads, including Chief of Staff Rory Casey, DPW Commissioner Dave Moore, outgoing DPW Superintendent Bill Fuqua, Personnel Director Bob Judge, City Attorney Sara Carroll, and Director of the Office of Community Development Alicia Zoeller.
Mr. McManus is eager to begin his work with the City. “I look forward to working with the dedicated staff of the Department of Public Works and other city departments as we advance the mission of the DPW,” says Mr. McManus, “I’ve met with several of the city’s staff and I am impressed at their knowledge, enthusiasm, and satisfaction that they take in their work. I look forward to the opportunity to work for, and with, the community that I have grown up in and love. This is a very exciting time to be joining the Mayor’s administration, and I look forward to getting to know this community more than I already do.
