Mayor Morse and Superintendent to Attend
Gates Foundation Education Conference in DC

HOLYOKE – Mayor Morse and Superintendent Dr. Paez will travel to Washington DC from March 13 to March 14 for a conference titled, “Mayors in Education Convening”, hosted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in conjunction with the US Conference of Mayors.  The Gates Foundation invited an exclusive group of mayors from around the country that provide leadership and are closely involved in their school systems, in order to discuss ways to increase the achievement of students, particularly those who are disadvantaged.

According to a copy of the agenda from the Gates Foundation, the two day convening includes various sessions on a wide variety of educational topics, hosted by a myriad of educational leaders and mayors from across the country.  A “fireside chat” with Bill Gates will take place on the morning of March 14, to discuss opportunities and challenges that mayors face when reforming education in their cities and allow for discussion and questions between mayors about education initiatives. The attendees will have an opportunity to participate in breakout sessions, with topics that range from navigating the Common Core State standards, advancing equity within our education system, and the importance of public and private partnerships to increase workforce opportunities for students.  The convening will allow mayors and education leaders to share valuable resources, experiences, and best practices focused around improving education.
