Jose Juan Barea Visits Holyoke Text Size

Dallas Mavericks guard J.J. Barea has won the 2017-2018 J. Walter Kennedy Award, awarded annually by the Professional Basketball Writers Association (PBWA) to a player, coach or team trainer “who shows outstanding service and dedication to the community.” J.J. and his coach Rick Carlisle are in town as the Basketball Hall of Fame will be honoring J.J. with a humanitarian award for his efforts on behalf of the recovery in Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria last year.

J.J. Addressed a well attending group of Holyoke students at Holyoke High School this morning. In his message to the students, he emphasized how important it is to stay in school. He encouraged the students to be more involved in issues and to build awareness in the community. J.J. remarked that being an athlete is not just about being strong on the court but being strong off the court as well.
