High Street Now Open to Traffic Between Cabot and Essex Streets Text Size

Since the Essex House’s partial collapse, High Street between Cabot and Essex has been closed to most traffic. After consulting with appropriate departments and business owners in the area, the City has decided to open that section of High Street to vehicular traffic, with the exception of tractor trailers. The section of High Street between Essex and Appleton is still closed to traffic. This is welcome news to local businesses, and the City is taking additional steps to aid the businesses affected by the collapse of the Essex House. The City is working with Representative Vega and the governor’s office to have the area deemed an economic disaster area, which will allow federal dollars to help affected businesses.

“As we work to ensure the safe and timely demolition of the Essex House, the City will continue to help all residents and businesses affected by the collapse,” Mayor Morse said. “Today’s move is an important step toward helping High Street businesses get back on their feet.”
