Presented by: Holyoke Economic Development and Industrial Corporation, Department of Public Works and CDM Smith

Organics-to-energy technologies are those that take certain types of waste – including organic materials such as food or yard waste, and convert it to electricity or heat. Some organics-to-energy systems also produce valuable compost or liquid fertilizer as byproducts. The benefits of organics-to-energy systems, which are usually sited on farms, food processing plants or wastewater treatment facilities, can include:

  • diversion of organic waste from landfills or incinerators,
  • generation of renewable energy,
  • reducing dependence on other fuels,
  • manufacturing of materials that improve soil health or productivity.

The City performed a study to see if it wou ld be feasible t o use existing sludge at the wastewater treatment facility and turn it into renewable energy, useful byproducts and reduce costs to  City services. The City and its consultants will be presenting the findings and gathering feedback from the community as part of analysis to potential next steps.

Please attend the presentation to learn more information and ask questions
