Mayor Morse will be proclaiming October 4,2013 as Holyoke Manufacturer’s Day, coinciding with National Manufacturing Day to recognize the value of manufacturers and their importance to the local economy.
Mayor Morse said that “it’s important to recognize our heritage as one of the first planned industrial cities in the United States, but also the importance of this sector going forward to create jobs and grow the tax base. Supporting the manufacturing industry has been integral part of my administration’s economy development strategy and today I am honored to recognize their role in our community.”
Over the last two years several businesses have expanded in Holyoke through the assistance of tax incentives or other assistance from the City, such as Package Machinery, Universal Quality Machine, Sealed Air Corporation, US Tsubaki and United Innovations. Long standing family owned businesses such as Hazen Paper and Hampden Papers continue to grow and be strong. Marcos Marrero, Director of Planning & Economic Development credits some of this business growth to the aggressive approach to retain and attract business as well as having a great partnership with the Holyoke Gas & Electric, the Chamber of Commerce and other partners. “I think key cross-sector partnerships, the strategic use of the City’s economic development incentives and the forward thinking Urban Renewal Plan contribute to a good business climate to attract businesses investment and growth” said Marrero.
Holyoke Manufacturing Day will kick-off with a meeting of the Mayor’s Industrial Development Advisory Committee (MIDAC) meeting. The meeting features a presentation on the Massachusetts Center for Advanced Design and Manufacturing, a new collaborative to help small and medium sized manufacturers keep up with new technologies appropriate to their business. Universal Plastics Corporation will host Middle School Precision Manufacturing Career Awareness Day for a group of 8th grade students form Peck-Lawrence Full Service Community School. The Greater Holyoke Chamber of Commerce will also celebrate October as Manufacturing Month with manufacturers forums, facility tours and features on made in Holyoke products.
