Mayor Alex B. Morse is pleased to announce that the Holyoke Fire Department has endorsed the Holyoke Early Literacy Initiative. On Tuesday, July 23rd at 2:00 p.m. Mayor Morse and Fire Chief John Pond announced the endorsement with a press conference at the Holyoke Fire Department Headquarters located at 600 High Street.

Almost everyday three to four new parents visit the Fire Department to get their car seats installed for free by Maria Pelcher, the Holyoke Fire Department’s Safety Inspector. As of August 1, 2013, parents will also receive a letter from the Fire Chief congratulating them on being safe and reminding them of the importance of reading to their children. In addition parents will receive a free book.

“These creative ideas led by Mayor Morse and supported by city departments like the HFD will make a significant impact in the next generation of Holyoke students,” commented Andrew Melendez, the Holyoke Early Literacy Coordinator.
