Puerto Rican Discovery Day Flag Raising
“Discovery of Puerto Rico Day” will be observed with a flag-raising ceremony at Holyoke City Hall on Wednesday, November 19, at 3 p.m.
Discovery Day is celebrated each year on November 19 to commemorate the arrival of Christopher Columbus in Puerto Rico in 1493. It is a national holiday in Puerto Rico. The day, also known as Día del Descubrimiento de Puerto Rico, honors the island’s history and culture, including its Taíno indigenous roots and the subsequent Spanish, African, and American influences.
The program will include the Puerto Rican National Anthem, remarks by Jazmin Acevedo, and the reading of a proclamation by Holyoke Mayor Joshua A. Garcia followed by the raising of the Puerto Rican flag.
The public is invited.
