James Michael Leahy was born, raised and continues to reside in Holyoke. He is a graduate of Holyoke High School, class of 1992 and of Westfield State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and Public Administration. Leahy is the son of Thomas and Mary Ellen McGinty Leahy. Thomas emigrated from County Kerry, Dingle, Ireland in 1964 and Mary Ellen was born and raised in Holyoke.
Early in his career, Leahy was appointed by Governor Paul Cellucci to the State of Massachusetts Transportation Department. After ten years, Leahy moved on to the Public Sector focusing his business acumen in the Pharmaceuticals Industry. In addition to his professional career, Leahy has a career in public office. He has held a seat on the Holyoke City Council for 16 years. First elected in 1999, Leahy has won reelection to a two-year term seven times since then. On the City Council he serves on the Public Service Committee and the Finance Committee. Leahy has said, “Serving on the Finance committee is one of the most important jobs that I have had; we are essentially the ‘checks and balances’ for the City.”
Leahy is the Co-Director of Marketing and Sponsorship for the St. Patrick’s Committee of Holyoke, Inc., which is a non-profit that operates one of largest St. Patrick Day parades in the country. This Parade, 10K Road Race and accompanying events are responsible for bringing over 20 million dollars to the economy in the Pioneer Valley every year. He also served as the President/CEO of this organization in 2010. For his major efforts in fundraising for the Parade Committee, Leahy won the 2013 George E. O’Connell Award.
Jim Leahy’s dedication to the growth and success of Holyoke is unmatched. In addition to his position as a City Councilor and volunteer work on the Parade Committee, he has also made time to serve on numerous Boards of Directors including: The Volleyball Hall of Fame, Holyoke Merry Go Round, Boy’s and Girl’s Club of America, Holyoke Youth Soccer and was a past member of the Holyoke Y.M.C.A and Children’s Museum boards.
In 2010, Leahy was recognized by BusinessWest by being selected for the “40 Under Forty” award, which is given annually to 40 men and women under the age of 40 in Western Massachusetts who have made an impact in their professional career as well as in volunteer capacities. When Leahy isn’t working he enjoys playing golf and spending time with his beautifull wife, Attorney Eileen Brady Leahy and his three children: Brendan (13), Caroline (12) and Paige (7)
