Did you know ???

·      Every day Massachusetts loses about 40 acres of open space.  That’s about the twice the size of the Holyoke Mall or about 10x the size of Holyoke High School!

·      Massachusetts is home to 180 endangered species of plants and animals!

 ·      Massachusetts farms contribute $2 billion to the state economy and supports 19,000 jobs.

 ·      Over the last 250 years, Massachusetts has lost at least seven species to extinction.

 ·      Holyoke has almost as many endangered species as areas of Cape Cod.

 ·      Massachusetts has 5.2 million acres of land and only 980,000 acres or 19% is permanently protected.

 ·      Holyoke has forty three parks and playgrounds!

The Holyoke Water Works (HWW) has recently updated its Watershed Resource Protection Plan (WRPP) due to an Administrative Consent Order issued by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MADEP).  As a requirement of the Administrative Consent Order, to maintain its waiver from filtering Holyoke's drinking water sources, HWW must monitor, record, inspect and control all activity within the watershed areas.  As a result, no access is allowed at the McLean and Manhan Reservoirs.  Limited access is allowed at the Ashley and Whiting Street Reservoirs and unauthorized activities are posted at main reservoir entrances.  The goal of this policy is to eliminate and/or reduce the chance of pollutants entering our city's drinking water supplies.  We greatly appreciate your cooperation and attention to this matter.  Please call (413) 532-6778 to report any suspicious activities or for additional information regarding this program.
