Sustainability Project Focuses on Children Text Size

A passion for the environment and a desire to be a part of positive change became the vision for two Holyoke College Community students.

The Children’s Garden Project began two years ago when Leigh-Ellen Figueroa and Lauren Lemire of HCC wanted to make a difference, the goal was to set out to connect urban children with nature and basic agricultural concepts through a specially designed educational curriculum.

“When they’re actually doing the work, they love it. And it’s something that’s inherent in them,” said HCC student Leigh-Ellen Figueroa. “Actually getting kids into a garden, letting them plant the seeds, letting them see that grow, has a really powerful impact. More powerful than telling kids, you should eat something healthy.”
