Mayor Morse to Receive Donation for Veterans Text Size

Mayor Alex B. Morse will be accepting $1,500.00 in gift cards from the Holyoke Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Chapter 41 on behalf of the Holyoke Veterans’ Services. The donation will be presented to Mayor Morse by the DAV Holyoke Chapter Commander, Nick Flannery at the Mayor’s Office in Holyoke City Hall on Thursday, April 4th at 10:00AM.

The funds for the donation are raised annually by selling “Forget-Me-Nots” at local businesses and are given back to local veterans and veteran services. This is the first year that the local DAV Chapter will be giving some of the money to the local Veteran Services office instead of the proceeds going solely to the Holyoke Soldiers Home. The little blue flowers, called the Forget-Me-Nots, commemorate those who fought and died during World War I and are used “to assist those who came home bearing the scars of war,” according to the DAV website.

“We sincerely appreciate the Disabled American Veterans giving back to the local community, these gift cards will help some of our neediest veterans,” commented Holyoke Veterans’ Services Director, Tim Niejadlik.

This year the DAV will be selling poppies the weekend of May 9th-11th at the two Holyoke Stop & Shop locations at 2265 Northampton Street and 28 Lincoln Street. For more information and to learn how to help in their efforts please visit the DAV Website.
