Holyoke Senior Center Opens YMCA-staffed Fitness Room Text Size
The Holyoke Senior Center now offers a fitness room staffed by the YMCA. The Fitness Center offers supervised exercise activity utilizing cardiovascular and weight equipment designed specifically for seniors.
The Fitness Center’s equipment and services were chosen by the Y in collaboration with the City of Holyoke’s Council on Aging. Equipment was chosen to help improve cardiovascular health and overall strength; resulting in improved posture, lower cholesterol, increased bone density, alleviation of joint pain and fall prevention. The Fitness Center will serve people from a wide-range of abilities with equipment that is simple to use and easy on joints, giving older adults an effective workout so they can stay active into their later years.
The Y will staff the Fitness Center Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 11:30 PM. There are two membership options available for individuals 60 and older providing different levels of access to classes at both the Senior Center and at the Greater Holyoke YMCA facility down the street.
“This facility will be a great addition to the wonderful services already being provided at our new Senior Center,” Mayor Morse said. “We’re fortunate to have this partnership with the YMCA and I can’t wait to see how it will enhance the quality of life for our City’s seniors.”
“The Greater Holyoke YMCA is recognized as one of the premier leaders in health and wellness in our area. In fact, many folks who come to our Senior Center already attend the Y’s active older adult programming,” said Kathy Bowler, Council on Aging Executive Director. “The Y has a wealth of experience providing specific programs and services that positively impact older adults. We’re really happy about this collaboration.”
Said Kathy Viens, CEO of the Greater Holyoke YMCA, “We know that research shows that active older adults are healthier and happier. Partnering with Kathy Bowler and her team at the Senior Center was a collaboration that made lots of sense because together we can do so much more!”
