MADE IN HOLYOKE

Medical supplies, cable and electric harnesses, paper pads and file folders, printing plates, furniture, games and puzzles, business forms, water filters, doors-prehung and hollow metal, school supplies and notebooks, decorative packaging paper, synthetic fibers, fine papers, beer, novelty paper products, loose-leaf binders, industrial vacuum cleaners, cardboard tubing, rubber stamps, roller chain, dandy rolls and many more products are all made in Holyoke. This is a rather impressive list of manufactured items for an "old" industrial city in Massachusetts.  The 135 or so companies that manufacture various goods and products in Holyoke employ approximately 5500 people from throughout the Pioneer Valley Region.  These companies conduct their businesses in the US and worldwide markets.

The importance of the industrial base in the City is highlighted by the fact that 22.8% of all jobs in Holyoke are in the manufacturing sector as compared to only approximately 15% in the State and the US.  Furthermore, this industrial complex attracts capital investment to the City and generates imported income which is used to pay worker's wages.

Many New England cities have lost the manufacturing component of their economic base.  Along with these losses have come not just the loss of community benefits, but the problems of abandoned real estate and the loss of taxable property.  The City of Holyoke is striving to continue to support manufacturers currently in Holyoke and those looking to relocate here to keep the economy healthy.  The industries of Holyoke were once focused on textiles, then paper, and was  known as the "Paper Capital of the World". Those same companies have been able to change with the market and adapt to new technologies that have allowed them to remain and grow for decades.
