Featuring fortepianist Monica Jakuc Leverett and vocalist Peter W. Shea with a replica of a piano from Schubert’s time.
On Saturday, October 1, Monica Jakuc Leverett will bring her replica of an 1819 Graf fortepiano for a Schubertiade, accompanied by tea. She will perform the four Schubert Impromptus Op. 90, interspersed with Schubert songs sung by Peter W. Shea, her collaborator over the last 20 years.
Franz Peter Schubert (1797- 1828) was an Austrian composer whose output consists of secular vocal pieces, symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music and a large body of chamber and piano music. Today, Schubert is considered one of the greatest composers of the late Classical and early Romantic eras and is one of the most frequently performed composers of the early nineteenth century.
In Schubert’s time, Schubertiades were small, unadvertised events held in private homes to celebrate and support the work of the great Austrian composer. Schubertiades of old included dancing, food and drink. Our version, open to all, will include an afternoon tea.
Ms. Jakuc Leverett is Elsie Irwin Sweeney Professor Emerita of Music at Smith College, where she taught from 1969 until 2008. A frequent solo and chamber pianist in Western Massachusetts, she is also a featured performer with the Wistaria Chamber Music Society. Inspired by Malcolm Bilson, Ms. Jakuc Leverett has performed on early pianos since 1986. A former board member of Arcadia Players, she has frequently appeared with them on her two Paul McNulty fortepianos, one of which will be featured in this event. She has recorded three CDs. Her latest, “Fantasies for Fortepiano,” is available at cdbaby.com. Please visit www.monicajakucleverett.com.
Peter W. Shea has sung professionally since 1972, primarily in the Connecticut River Valley, but also throughout New England and eastern New York. He is often heard as a soloist with regional musical groups such as Arcadia Players, Hampshire Choral Society, South Hadley Chorale, the Farmington Valley Chorale and the Brattleboro Concert Choir. Peter also sings regularly with local groups including Cantabile and the Illuminati Vocal Arts Ensemble. He is a member of the Wistaria Chamber Music Society, appearing in many of its concerts, as well as those of other music series in the Pioneer Valley and beyond.
