Holyoke lost a tireless and passionate educator, friend and champion of social justice this year, and on September 21, the students, friends, family and colleagues of Elia Dreyfuss will gather to celebrate and commemorate her life and work.
Dreyfuss dedicated her life to improving the lives and economic circumstances of thousands of people in low-income and Latino communities in Mexico, California, and Holyoke. She served residents of Holyoke for over 20 years, first as an ESOL teacher at the Community Education Project-Juntos, and for the past eight years, as the coordinator of the Transition to College and Careers Program at Holyoke Community College. Her work created the opportunity for hundreds of low-income, first generation college students to enter college prepared to succeed academically; with education plans tied to career paths to jobs that pay family supporting wages.
The event will be held in Veterans Park in Holyoke from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM,Saturday, September 21. A reception will follow at the Picknelly Adult and Family Education Center at 206 Maple St., across from Veterans Park. All are welcome.
