City of Holyoke Christmas Tree Lighting & Santa Arrives on the Polar Express Text Size

Join Mayor Alex Morse as Holyoke kicks off the season with the holiday event of the year! This festive event has it all for families and friends to enjoy on the first Saturday in December. Special guests, music, crafts and snacks at City Hall starts at 4:00 pm; Santa arrives on the Pioneer Valley Railroads’ Polar Express Train right outside the Merry-Go-Round in Holyoke Heritage State Park. There will be horse drawn carriage rides, hot chocolate, cookies, carolers, music, ice sculpting, merry-go-round rides, and more! Not to mention the lighting of City’s Christmas tree at City Hall. Activities will be at and around City Hall and in Holyoke Heritage State Park. The event is free and open to the public; Merry-Go-Round rides are $2/person.

There is a lot going on in different venues during the 4:00 – 8:00 pm time frame for the event. Here is a Schedule of Events at the venues for you.

City Hall (536 Dwight Street):  Activities begin at 4:00 pm and ends at 5:30pm. The drop off and pick up area for the horse drawn carriage rides is at the corner of High and Dwight Streets from 4:00 -8:00pm.

     4-5:30            Crafts, cookies and hot chocolate inside on the first floor

     4:30                Holyoke High School’s Bell Choir performs at 4:30 inside

     5:00-5:30    Holyoke High School’s Madrigal Choir performs outside, Mayor Morse addresses the crowd and the Christmas tree is lit

Holyoke Heritage State Park (221 Appleton Street): The park and facilities are alive with many things to do. Check out the activities at each venue below in addition to special characters visiting throughout the night!

In the Park:

     4:30               Santa arrives on the Pioneer Valley Railroad’s Polar Express at the station directly outside of the Merry-Go-Round

     4:30 – 8          Visit with Santa on board the stationary Polar Express train at no charge. The line forms inside the Merry-Go-Round Building

     5:00 – 7          Ice sculptor Mike Rondeau transforms large blocks of ice into festive art right outside of the Merry-Go-Round building

Visitor’s Center (located in the middle of the park):

      5:30 – 8:00 Visit with Olaf, Anna & Elsa from FROZEN, view beautiful trees decorated by members of the Holyoke Public Schools, and enjoy free hot chocolate and cookies. There is also a youth chorale concert scheduled to be performed in the center.

Holyoke Merry-Go-Round:

     4 – 8:00          Rides are $2/person. The Merry-Go-Round is also where the line form to visit Santa on board the Polar Express train.  There is no charge to visit Santa and the train is stationary for the visits.  

      4 – 7:30          Outside the MGR building is the other drop off & pick up point (along with City Hall) for the free horse drawn carriage rides.
